What is Generation Z?

[Generation Z] is not a ‘snoozing’ [generation] at all! …raised on technology, they are not scared of anything, they are open to new ideas but ironically they are romanced by the older characteristics exhibited by the Baby Boomers! They are into truth and loyalty and they are not afraid to voice their opinion. Key thing not to do to these Z’ers is NEVER lie to them. Then can spot a fake at ten paces…

They see their future and they are aiming for it. They are also the most environmentally conscious generation and they have listened to the messages given to them by their parents and other significant adults in their lives when it comes to abstinence and addictions. However, they are still going to make up their own mind…

They are flexible and open to change. In many respects, they are fearless and they’re fun!
Of course, real life hasn’t smacked them in the face yet, so their positivism is surely uplifting.
I only hope that the future lives up to the billing they are giving it. After all, they are the ‘new’ hope for our own future. -- Mina Marie from Pearlsoup.com

Conceptually, their great-grandparents belong mostly to the Silent Generation and the Baby boomers form the core of their grandparents. Their parents are seen as being roughly evenly divided between Generation X and Generation Y -- according to the book Generations

Referring to today's new generation:
Celebrity and brand culture that stifles and represses individuality is rejected in favour of the quest for something more real and meaningful. Clothing that enables maximum enjoyment and total self-expression. Real-life experiences, alternative sports and hands-on hobbies provide an alternative to the virtual world. As young people focus on the issues that matter to them they are increasingly looking for a sense of identity, a feeling of belonging and cultural identity.

In the past being educated meant knowing lots about the past. In the 21st century, it will increasingly mean looking to the future. --adapted from WGSN Trend Predictions 2004-2005
